Oslo World Music Festival
This week we got some great news here in Oslo and I know it’s not only good news for us, but for many music-lovers from many places ![]()
Oslo World Music Festival is continuing in a new form – as an independent foundation. The board for this foundation is Birger Carlsen from Solistkoret and Claes Olsen, booking director for the Øya festival.
Alexandra Archetti Stølen continues as festival director. And she founded a program council with 6 members, including artists and arrangers from Union Scene in Drammen, Södra Teater and Vestfoldspillene.
Oslo World Music festival will take place from October, 30th to Noevmber 4th.

12th Oslo International Church Music festival
March, 9th to March 18th 2012
We’re counting down to the Oslo International Church Music festival.
The theme of the year is “Passion and Passion music“.
Bente Johnsrud, Festival and Artistic Director, writes in her welcome greeting that “I read an article recently about what happens to us when we listen to music. The article made several interesting observations dating all the way back to the Renaissance, Fra Angelico and his famous painting The Annunciation. It was fascinating to read about how people listened then and how we listen now. What happens to us when sound waves hit our body, the skin, sensory organs, nervous system and brain? The process has been described as a mathematical motion against the skin that creates an inward ecstasy: a mystic experience. It is said that when a person listens to music, they find themselves, without losing the world.” You can read the complete greetings here.
This years festival opening finds place at the Oslo Cathedral on Friday, 9th at 7 pm. Kölner Kammerchor and Collegium Cartusianum with Peter Neumann as conductor gonna open the festival with “St. Matthew Passion” by J. S. Bach.
The festivals final conncert will be ”St. John Passion” by J. S. Bach at Oslo Cathedral, performed by Le Concert Lorrain and Nederlands Kamerkoor with
Christoph Prégardien as conductor.
Between these two highlights there will be a large various of concerts. Check out the list below. You’ll find links to the single events on the festivals website.

Oslo World Music festival day 4 and 5 – The Children’s days
Weekend! Alarm clock is ringing at eight am on Saturday and that’s much too early for a B-person like me that had been out for a concert the night before…
I worked as a volunteer for the children’s days on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6t of November.
The Children’s day was arranged for the 13th time as a part of the Oslo Worlds Music Festival at Grønland kulturstasjon and the backyard of Asylet. Two days with free multi cultural activities for children at all ages.
The volunteers for the children’s days met at 10 am on Saturday for an info-meeting and a walk through the building to get to know the workshops. Five floors with activities, concerts and dance shows from different cultures was a bit to memorize.
The activities covered everything from music for the youngest (0-3 years) with Celio in the rainforest, to Afro beat, Marimba from Zimbabwe, Outer Space animation, dancing guide through the “holly rooms”, Indonesian room, belly dance, Tamil canto and much, much more.
I worked both days as a kind of host for Celio De Carvalho, a Brazilian musician who performed music for the youngest children. The room was beautiful decorated with toy animals, green carpets and curtains and pillows to present a rainforest and had a calm atmosphere. The light was covered with green fabric that created a special light.
Celio brought along a large various number of instruments and with those he created a beautiful, melodious music experience. He has a special talent to bound both small children and parents with his way of playing, talking and singing. I became very fascinated each time when it was my turn to be the host inside and was able to listen and watch.
During the days we meet a lot of children and parents of course, but there was also a bit time to talk to other volunteers, especially during lunch break at the “private” lunchroom for the stuff and from my experience everyone was quite relaxed and happy with how things worked out (of course I wasn’t everywhere around and probably happy not to be in the backyard where everyone came in. I heard that there were really many people but got the impression that things worked fine.
Most of the visitors I meet were very impressed by Celios performance and the others activities and I really hope the Children’s days going to continue in their special kind of event.

- The thing with festivals is that you have a lot of to choose from and not enough time to reach it all, and of course, it’s a bit difficult to be in different places at ones… I at least haven’t succeeded to do that yet… And if you’re working as a volunteer it’s even more difficult to choose where to “sneak” in.
The second advance as a volunteer – you get to meet great people during the pre-meeting and you meet them again at the concerts…
On the second day of the festival there were seven concerts to choose between. With names like Asa and Nneka, Aurelio & Garifuna Soul Band, Anouar Brahem, Bambino, and more it wasn’t an easy choice. In the end I decided to go to Anouar Brahems concert at Kulturkirken Jakob.
Kulturkirken Jakob (Jakob Church of Culture) is located in the east of central Oslo. The former church was taken over by Kirkelig Kulturverksted in 2000 and turned it into a building for the arts, arranging different concerts, performances and exhibitions. I’ve been to several concerts and find it’s an amazing venue.
Anouar Brahems comes from Tunis and plays the oud. It’s was a concert full of atmosphere. Ending a bit sudden, but that’s me… I sometimes vanish in my world when I listen to music and get surprised when it’s stops… Don’t ask me where I go, I don’t know myself…
You can listen to some of his music here: Anouar Brahems at you tube
The third day of the festival arrived much too early and with the annoying sound of the alarm clock… Job was waiting, but I knew I would return to the world of world music again later that day. Some cups of coffee made the day go by…
Also today there were a lot of to choose between, but thanks to a sweet fellow volunteer how had already had made plans the night before I didn’t need to find out where to go on my own… Thank you Denise!!!
So my third concert on the third night was with Electrocutango at Riksscenen. They play Argentine tango in electronic wrapping. I actually realised that I’ve heard their music before when they played the first song, so that was promising… You can go to the festival website to listen to some of the music
A “little” special supplement was Cecilia Garcia and Serkan Gokcesu dancing the tango during the concert. They’re really good and a pleasure to watch.
It was a great event for a Fridays night. Afterwards I had to head home since I was supposed to get up early to work for the Childrens day on the festivals fourth and fifth day.
Report from Oslo World Music Festival 2011
The most common thing on a blog is to write regular updates after each event you’ve been to, especially if you want to tell about an ongoing festival. When this is said I have to admit I didn’t made time to sit down and write much this week…. I chose to go to work on day time (knowing my boss really likes that) and to enjoy the festival on night time (knowing I really like that!). Guess I have to take a week with vacation next year… So now I going to spend the next days writing about the concerts I’ve been to during the festival, hoping you’ll enjoy that, too…
It all started with the opening concert “Dreams of the lost road” and its afterparty last Wednesday…
Åse Kleveland, the director of Concerts Norway, opened the festival. In her speech she looked back to the history of the Oslo World Music Festival which been arranged by Concerts Norway since 1994. (By the way the same year I moved to Norway). This year was the last year Concerts Norway arranged the festival after the government decided that the festival should become an independent organisation.
Åse Kleveland said in her speech that “Like most parents, we at Concerts Norway are anticipating our offspring’s coming of age with mixed feelings of sadness, pride and expectation: Sadness because the festival is such a vital part of our overall activities, pride over the quality and position that the festival has attained, and high expectations for its future evolution.”
Festival director Alexandra Archetti Stølen thanked everyone who has supported the festival during the years.
The group DakhaBrakha brought their multimedia concert with dancers, 3 D laser, video animation, experimental theatre and of course – music to Oslo. The group comes from the milieu around the Centre of Contemporary Arts (DAKH) in Kiev, Ukraine.
I don’t think I’m the right person to describe and interpret their music since I’m not that competent when it comes to music… But I can say I was fascinated by the combination of music, theatre and video.
You can listen and watch some of it here: DakhaBrakha on Concerts Norways website
After the concert we went over to Vulkan for the afterparty. I met a lot of happy people discussing the event they just been to, the festival to come and just wanted to have a great time.
Alexandra Archetti Stølen also presented the “voluntary of the year” and there were more surprises to come. I unfortunately had to leave quite early since I had to be at work…
More to come…
