The Norwegian Petter Olsen owns one edition of “The Scream” by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. It’s the only private owned version of “The Scream”. Olsen made the decision to sell it on an auction in May in New York this year.  Olsen wants to finance a hotel and a local Museum hidden under ground at his cultural centre, Ramme Gaard. This will offer the unique opportunity of giving Edvard Munch and the “Christiania Bohemians” their rightful place in Norway’s cultural history. The plan is to finish in time for the 150 years Munch jubilee in 2013.

If you have followed the discussion about a new Munch museum in Oslo, and the general discussion of new buildings for the National museum, you already know about “Munch’s situation” and art in general in Norway.  I feel that we should give standing ovation to Olsen for taking any kind of action to give art a worthy  museum.

The sale of “The scream” has attracted much attention and discussions in the news here in Norway and all over the world.
In Norway it has been discussed among other things if it should be allowed to sell Munch “out of the country”.
Experts believe “The Scream” can be sold for more than 80 million dollars.

“The Scream” is Edvard Munch’s most famous work and it’s also one og the most know paintings in art.
Munch wrote about it: “I was walking down the road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly, the sky turned as red as blood. I stopped and leaned against the fence, feeling unspeakably tired. Tongues of fire and blood stretched over the bluish black fjord. My friends went on walking, while I lagged behind, shivering with fear. Then I heard the enormous, infinite scream of nature.”

The Munch museum now works for showing all four versions of “The Scream” in April before Olsen’s edition heads to New York. If they succeed it will be the only time in history at all four versions are shown together.
